Health & Aging

Alzheimer’s Association helps you increase your knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease, discover new medical treatments, and locate the chapter nearest you. Includes materials in Spanish.

Alzheimer’s Disease Education and Referral (ADEAR) Center provides information about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. In addition, bibliographies and links to local chapters are available online. This is a service of the National Institute on Aging (NIA).

American Academy of Family Physicians offers rich resources on all types of medical, health and wellness information, including a section on “Herbal and Alternative Remedies.” The site features many articles in Spanish.

American Cancer Society is a rich resource for people with cancer and their loved ones. Visitors can also learn about prevention and early detection, including current mammography information for breast cancer screening.

American Diabetes Association provides information on diabetes, prevention, and healthy lifestyle. Users can also search for local resources.

American Dietetic Association includes excellent fact sheets, many of which are also in Spanish, and reading lists. The organization runs a nutrition hotline as well.

American Lung Association offers smoking cessation materials and other information to help users improve their lung health.

Arthritis Foundation is the only national not-for-profit organization that supports the more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions with information, advocacy, programs, services and research. Spanish language materials may be purchased.

Medicare.gov is the official federal government website for the Medicare program. Its valuable resources include FAQs about Medicare coverage, information on supplemental plans, an interactive nursing home comparison tool with data on all Medicaid- and Medicare-licensed nursing homes in the U.S., a participating physician directory, and a search tool for prescription drug assistance programs.

Medline Plus is a service of the National Library of Medicine. The site features up-to-date information on senior health and wellness topics, a medical dictionary, and many articles in Spanish.

www.menopauseNU.org is an easy-to-use site gives women a personalized approach to assess their overall health and to manage their menopause symptoms. It includes the latest research on menopause, current drug and non-drug therapies, and a self-assessment that will help women and their healthcare providers evaluate symptoms and treatment options.

Men’s Health Network offers information on an array of health issues, including screening and prevention, and other issues of concern to older men.

National Alliance for Hispanic Health features materials in English and Spanish on important health and mental health issues.

National Institute on Aging is an excellent government site featuring health information and resources for seniors. Information also is available in Spanish.

National Institutes of Health features information on a wide array of health and wellness topics for older adults, and includes materials in Spanish.

Caregiving

Alzwell emphasizes the emotional component of caregiving. Caregivers can explore various resources, share their stories, gather information and scribble notes on the “anger wall.” The site links to an online foreign language translation program.

Caregiving Online focuses on caregiving information, education, support and validation, and encourages public awareness and advocacy.

Family Caregiver Alliance offers a comprehensive site dealing with a variety of topics such as balancing work and caregiving, and caring for Alzheimer’s patients. It also offers links to other caregiving sites. The site includes some fact sheets in Spanish and Chinese.

National Alliance for Caregiving provides important links and serves as a good general resource for family caregivers.

Community Services

Hospice Net is an independent, non-profit organization working exclusively through the Internet. The organization provides information and support to patients and families facing life-threatening illnesses.

Meals On Wheels is a private, non-profit organization devoted to helping keep senior citizens independent by delivering nutritious meals to them at home.

National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers has information about the association and what type of services geriatric care managers provide. You can also search the member roster to look for a care manager in your area.

Growth House provides resources for hospice and homecare, palliative care and pain management. Search topic areas including pain management, elder care, estate planning, funeral planning, and HIV and AIDS.

Eldercare Resources

Alzheimer’s Association is the largest national voluntary health organization dedicated to advancing research for the causes, treatments, and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. This site can help you to find your local Alzheimer’s chapter. Users also have access to additional information about the disease, as well as resources for people with Alzheimer’s, families and caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s, and help with planning for the future.

Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation offers an abundance of information on Alzheimer’s. From identifying the signs, symptoms, causes, and risks of the disease, to finding resources and support to help you through treatment, this site has an encompassing array of information on everything related to Alzheimer’s.

American Dietetic Association is the nation’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. Use this site to access tips and resources to help you or a loved one maintain a healthy diet for a healthy lifestyle. This site can also be used to locate a registered dietician. Search by type of service, including individual or group counseling and area of expertise.

American Medical Association has over 690,000 providers and information on licensed physicians in the United States. Users can search for a physician by name or specialty.

ElderWeb is a site for adults of all ages. This site offers information about topics ranging from financial planning and retirement to romance and assisted living.

FirstGov for Seniors is a government site offers a wealth of information for all citizens including health, consumer action and affairs, online services, national news, and seasonal health and safety tips.

The National Association of Geriatric Care Managers is the association of professionals who specialize in assisting older people and their families in meeting their long-term care needs. Use their resource finder to locate a geriatric care manager in a location convenient to you or your older relative.

Doctor Directory.com allows users to search by city and state for the physician or hospital located nearest you. Users can also access resources and additional information by topic area. Working Professionals may also advertise their practice to patients through this website.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) represents the country’s leading research-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. This site can help low-income patients to finance their prescriptions and help users to identify these patient (i.e., drug) assistance programs.

Eldercare Locator allows users to search for a wide variety of elder care resources by state and zip code, this site also offers resources for caregivers and helpful links to government-sponsored websites.

360 Degrees of Financial Literacy sponsored by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, provides hundreds of articles, online tools, FAQs, and an ask-the-expert option and includes retirement planning.

Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards is the official website of the regulatory agency of financial planners. Learn what financial planning is and check on CFP licensee status.

The Financial Planning Association allows users to find a financial advisor, educational materials, and when and why to seek professional advice.

Social Security Administration features publications, answers to frequently asked questions, and current information on issues affecting benefits recipients. Includes materials in 14 foreign languages, including Spanish.

WISER is sponsored by the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement and the National Center on Women and Aging. Fact sheets are available online that address a variety of topics as they relate to retirement, finances and women. Specific topics include pensions, Social Security, divorce, and widowhood.

Grief / Loss End Of Life

AARP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping older Americans achieve lives of independence, dignity and purpose. The site includes a wide array of materials of interest to older adults and others, including Funeral Goods and Services and Pre-Paying for Your Funeral. Some materials are available in Spanish.

Better Business Bureau is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes ethical business standards and voluntary self-regulation of business practices. The BBB’s website offers information about pre-need funeral planning.

CancerNet at the National Cancer Institute provides valuable information for people with end-stage cancer and their loved ones. It features materials on coping with cancer, finding support, and end-of-life issues. Many resources are available in Spanish.

Coping with Grief and Loss from the HelpGuide. This resource center addresses different types of grief and loss, along with ways to get support and care for yourself.

Cremation Association of North America is an association of crematories, cemeteries and funeral homes that offer cremation.

Funeral Consumers Alliance a nonprofit, educational organization that supports increased funeral consumer protection, is affiliated with the Funeral and Memorial Society of America (FAMSA).

GriefHealing features articles by Martha Tousley, RN – a hospice bereavement counselor who has won awards for her writings. One set of articles deals with “Human Loss and Grieving” and the other set with “Pet Loss and Grieving. There is also a very comprehensive book list for adults and for children on bereavement.

GriefShare is a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences. Use their website to find a support group near you.

Growth House is an “international gateway to resources for life-threatening illness and end of life care.” It includes grief and loss resources, as well as a “Guide to Funeral and Memorial Planning.”

MISS Foundation is a volunteer-based non-profit organization that aids families after the death of a child from any cause. Their website includes many articles and resources for parents and other adults, and also features materials to help grieving children, as well as some materials in Spanish. MISS also works on “legislative and advocacy issues, community engagement and volunteerism, and culturally competent, multidisciplinary, education opportunities.”

National Funeral Directors Association sells a wide range of useful books, pamphlets, and videos.
